Overview of Brain or Head Injury

Would you believe there are about 1.7 million cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the U.S. every year? Not so shocking, you might probably say. But here’s the catch. In these instances, majority of the TBI cases lead to hospitalizations, if not death.

While TBI is mostly serious when it happens in automobile accidents, it’s equally catastrophic too when one is hit by a hard object coming in at a high rate of speed. Serious head trauma and brain injuries may also result from full-contact sports activities, falls, and work-related accidents.

Brain trauma or related head injury can cause serious complications. The usual problems include swelling, bruising, or bleeding of the brain. The consequences can be debilitating, if not fatal.

Open and Closed: The 2 Types of Brain Injuries

There are 2 main kinds of brain injuries. The first is open injury. What this means is that the skull is cracked or fractured, leaving an opening. This type of head injury occurs after a person falls and hits his or her head on something hard. It may also result when a hard object is struck onto the head.

On the other hand, a closed head injury does not involve any opening on the skull caused by a fracture. However, it is still equally serious as an open head injury because there is a possibility of swelling, bruising, or bleeding of the brain. Where there is bleeding, there could also be formation of dangerous blood clots.

It is not uncommon to see loss of consciousness or brain damage as a result of a brain or head injury. In some cases, it may also lead to paralysis. Or worse, death.

What Are the Warning Signs of a Serious Brain Injury?

Not all symptoms of a serious brain or head injury become apparent right after the incident. In some cases, it may emerge only after a couple of days or weeks or even months after the event. Thus, it may be difficult to ascertain if you or your loved one has suffered such injury soon after the accident. This is especially true if there are no other physical indications or visual cues that would tell that the injury exists.

But there are simple ways to determine the existence of these warning signs of brain or head injury. If you’re evaluating a potential head injury, here are a few indicators to look out for.

Confusion or mental state of disorderly jumble
Memory problems or difficulty remembering the events that unfold during the accident
Dizziness, vertigo, or nausea
Severe headache
Numbness or weakness of the body
Balance problems

Should you identify the existence of any of these indicators after a head injury or accident, it is crucial that one calls for immediate medical help. Please note that it is impossible for an injured individual to feel fine as if nothing happened. It is highly recommended that the latter should not make any movements that might cause complications should there be any injury.

There may be exceptional cases where the injured driver or passenger from an automobile accident has just suffered serious trauma and still was able to move away from the scene. Whether or not he or she was able to do so with or without the help of another person, the important thing is to go to the nearest medical center for an evaluation and treatment of the head injury.

Common Brain and Head Injuries

In automobile accidents, bruising of the brain is a common injury. This also occurs in falls and sports-related events or mishaps. When a strong force impacts the head, it causes the brain to move forward and backward inside the skull.

Each impact to the inside walls of the skull causes the bruising of the brain. In cases where the force is too strong, this causes a violent motion of the brain. As a result, there may be more than bruising; bleeding of the brain becomes highly likely.

Head trauma can also cause tearing to the brain. Imagine a block of ice forcefully struck by a hammer. Naturally there would be bits and pieces that would shatter and break off the bigger block. The same concept applies to the brain. There will be portions of the brain that would be damaged when blunt force is applied to the head. As a result, there may be serious impairment of the nervous system and motor skills.

Swelling is another common head injury that results from a forceful impact. While it is the body’s natural process of healing itself, swelling may cause problems in the brain region. Because of the swelling, there may not be enough room for the brain to migrate. This may result in intra-cranial pressure, leading to the impairment of bodily functions.

Medical Evaluation and Treatment for Serious Brain or Head Injuries

In cases of serious brain injuries or head trauma, the injured person has to undergo medical evaluation to determine the extent of the damage. When the existence of injury is ascertained, treatment has to begin as soon as possible. This is to minimize the risk of serious complications or fatality.

For this reason, the injured person will require financial assistance to answer for the costs relating to his treatment, rehabilitation, and recovery. During the period of his or her treatment or recovery, it is possible that the injured person may not be able to continue with his or her regular employment, business, or work. Without any means of income, he or she, along with the family, may suffer.

To alleviate this financial suffering, the law affords upon the injured person the right to receive various types of economic compensation. Where capacity to earn an independent living is permitted under his or her circumstances, the injured person is protected from any form of discrimination from the employer.
